First Day Feature: Al Koleon talks “Cloud Surfing” EP, upcoming performances and more.

Al Koleon is an emcee with an interesting background. With roots tracing back to the battle rap scene he packs a lyrical punch akin to the East Coast forefathers of rap. He mixes this skill with undeniable hustle, a street background (that unfortunately led him to a 5 1/2 year sentence in the past) and a superb business acumen that’s helped Al to pioneer the indie label Outfitt Music to higher heights day-by-day. In all ways the evidence points towards someone with the makings to be a star.

2015 helped to put the aforementioned qualities in the spotlight with the success of his EP Cloud Surfing. Receiving coverage on YouHeardThatNew, The Source and several other notable platforms the body of work has left great impressions with the listeners and lead to a heightened level of visibility. One would have to wonder how the New Jersey-born artist has been holding up since the release and what’s next up on his schedule. Fortunately we were able to get the answers for that and more. Come follow us.

For the readers who may be new to you could you share more about yourself?

I’m a Puerto Rican hip-hop artist who was born in Plainfield, NJ. I’ve
been a fan of hip-hop for as far as I could remember. I’m 100% Indie, I take
pride in what I do & I will lyrically massacre your favorite artist!!

How did the name come about?

The name Al Koleon came from the hood/era I grew up in. Back then we
were on some Mafia shit.

What’s a thing about you that people may not know, particularly outside of the realm of music?

I’ve been to hell & back with gasoline boots on just to get to where
I’m at now!!

If you could name your biggest strength musically what would you say it is?

The fact that I could rap in English & Spanish.

What has been the proudest moment of your career to date and why?

When I opened up for Kirko Bangz, because I had one of my youngest fans on stage with me. Seeing a kid that young (11 y.o.) being influenced by my
music made me proud of what I do & more importantly who I am.

Your “Cloud Surfing” EP has been making its rounds for over a month now and I love it. Has the response been what you expected as a whole?

Yea most definitely.. Digital sales are doing well & physical sales are
taking over in the Chicagoland area.

Its obvious you used your love of Mary Jane as the main inspiration but what other influences played a role in the sound? Its such a cohesive project.

Well the producers (Boogie, TipTop, Kritical Dyverse, T.Clark & Jesse
Black) worked real hard on the project. We wanted to capture a variety of
sounds & harmonies to give the Fans a great smoking experience.

What were the sessions like creating Cloud Surfing? I’m guessing it was a bit cloudy in the studio.

The sessions were dope..simply because we had a lot of fun creating
different records about Cloud Surfing. Experimenting with different
sounds, smoking all types of different strains & getting super high!! Ooowwweee….

Was the length of the tape by design? When I first played it I kind of tripped out because it was the perfect amount of time for me to roll and smoke.

Nah, it actually just happened like that!

As a personal connoisseur I must ask what is your favorite strain and why?

OG, because it’s the best strain out there. Smell, looks, taste, high, everything about it is perfect! Not to mention it’s the mother plant to many of the top strains in the market today!

What was the thought process behind the tape?

To give my fans a dope experience & music to smoke to.

The artwork is so tripped out. What was it like coming up with the concept for it?

Well I gave My Graphics Designer (Bernardo Sierra) an idea of what I wanted & he brought it to life.

You’ve been pretty busy on the performance front performing with Project Pat and Lil Wyte earlier in the month. Also on your schedule is a festival performance in San Antonio alongside Z-Ro October 16th. How have the recent shows helped to make for better performances in the future?

Yea I like to look at it as practice. The more I perform the better I become at it. The key is to keep rocking stages & give the Fans what they want.

Tell us more about your Outfitt Music imprint and the upcoming plans in that front?

Outfitt Music Inc is a movement we’ve been building brick by brick over
the years. We’re 100% independent & we’re finally starting to see the money coming in… So yea it’s growing!

Outside of the ventures we’ve already mentioned what else is on your radar for the remainder of 2015?

Just recording new music & promoting “Cloud Surfing” as hard as we can. I want to take this EP to the next level!

Is there any other news or thoughts you’d like to share with the fans?

Yea.. I hope ya ready for this next video! (Moonrocks & OG)
