If you’re looking for a lady with musical talent, intelligence, and charisma look no further than the one and only Lyric Jones. Getting her start musically through church and local talent shows, Lyric discovered a passion that would follow her throughout her life. Now we find the Boston-bred talent as a well rounded entertainer on her way to super stardom. The sky is the limit for Lyric as her array of talent as an emcee, vocalist, drummer, writer and promoter gives her endless ways to exhibit her skills. Determined not to be labeled as the typical “Femcee” Lyric Jones doesn’t display the overt sexual tone that saturates the market currently. Instead, she leans towards her skill and excellent lyrical prowess to pave her own lane in the game. When I tell you this young lady has BARS I mean that very seriously.
We don’t hear the story of working a 9-5, we don’t hear the story of having a college and career route then doing something else. We know that it exists and we know people can relate we just never hear that in music.
Lyric’s music is a vivid form of art that reels you in, commanding the listener to take heed to her every word. This quality of Ms. Jones’ that makes her music consort you in such a commendable manner is the thing that drew me in. Upon first listening I found myself becoming a bigger fan with every form of wordplay used, witty line laid, and introspective story told. It’s a sound that would fit seamlessly into that, which we tend to miss so much from the mid 90’s when content and narrative were more sought after. No matter what song you choose to listen to from her catalog, there is almost always a relatable message that will resonate with you.
2012 marked the beginning of her career as we know it with the release of her well crafted debut LP Jones St. That initial seed has grown into increasingly palpable buzz with the release of the romance-heavy Love’s Trail Mix project in 2014 and 2015’s “Office Space” channeling Gems From The Cubicle EP. The growth displayed through this music led to a milestone in her first tour in 2015, joining Cali Agents (Planet Asia & Rasco) on their nationwide 15-year anniversary sets. The tour was a great platform for Lyric who takes great pride in her live show. She manages to plays drum-sets live throughout shows further proving how thorough the spectrum of talent Lyric Jones possesses is. Heads are turning and the attention growing with coverage from legends like Sway, DJ Premiere, Tony Touch and Statik Selektah along with countless internet sources such as HipHopDX, DJBooth & others. The ever-growing presence only has the fanbase growing more and more, firmly setting her on the list of ladies to watch in rap.
I’m trying to get to that level to where it’s not “she’s dope for a girl”, it’s “she’s one of the illest, period”.
Lyric Jones’ library is littered with so much of her own personality I was moved to learn even more first-hand. Fortunately, I was granted the opportunity to speak with the lovely lyricist who now resides in L.A., before her recent promo run to New York. What embarked was a great dialogue that allowed me to learn more about some personal inspirations, the experience her first tour provided, the influence the late Phife Dawg had on her career, and of course the music. Predictably with an artist so fascinating and unique as Lyric, we got some interesting feedback that we think you’ll enjoy! Check out the interview below.
