Throughout time the city of Miami has been a notable hotbed for talent in the hip-hop culture. From way back in the 90’s with Uncle Luke’s raunchy raps to DJ Khaled and his major keys the city has always had a prominent figure to call it’s own. Lately it does seem that there is a lane in waiting to be filled for the next star to rep the city. If you ask me personally, I’d be inclined to say Brenton Brown has a strong chance at being just that guy.
While Miami is definitely a part of Brenton’s being he is not the typical rapper when compared to his surroundings. As the son of Jamaican-born parents, Brenton was born in Brooklyn before spending time in Baldwin, Long Island and ultimately Miami. This makes for a hybrid-like set of experiences that helped shaped him into the man he is today. The University of Florida grad uses his knowledge and experience to bring forth a musical product like none other.
Brenton manages to take his expressive soul and place it in his music. Since his 2012 debut The Brenton Brown Affair there has always been a since of stylistic awareness and literacy put into all he does. The strong lyrical ability from Brenton has worked it’s way nationwide in the 4 year time period earning him stamped approval in the form of features from Miami’s GhostWridah, veteran West Coast rhyme-smith Planet Asia and even Joe Budden.
The hard work still continues as Brenton works feverishly to build his base further. Literally week by week the results are starting to show more as his #9TeaseTuesdays series pushes forth. Using inspiration from close friend and fellow MC Marvelous Mag, Brenton put the series together in hopes of bridging the classic sounds of the 90’s with the more modern sounds of today. Throughout the 23-weeks #9TeaseTuesdays have been in existence we’ve seen Brenton flips classic instrumental after classic. He really does a fine job, sometimes making completely different tracks with viewpoints that are much different than the originals. The knack for his time-tested musical selections has earned him coverage from major hip-hop publications like 2DopeBoyz, HipHopZilla and countless others.
I learned a lot speaking with Brenton for this piece. While the road for him hasn’t been an easy one in anyway I can tell that he is equipped for the challenges thrown his way. Brenton possesses a very likable personality to go along with the awesome music so if you’d like to learn more check out our full conversation on the next page.
