As spring comes to an end only one thing can follow and that’s the blistering temperatures summer brings. Don’t take that the wrong way though, summer has always been a force of motivation when it comes to the genre of Hip-Hop we know and love so much. For the last 20 years artists like Jay-Z, Kanye West, 50 Cent, and countless others have laid claim to the sunny season in an effort to assert dominance in the game. For a more recent example look no further than Drake and his blatantly boastful Summer Sixteen single. The competitive nature of rap music will always exist and with everyone thinking they are “hot” its important that periodically someone comes along to douse the flames. That’s the point in which we find Kiza Sosay and his Ice Water EP which will release to the masses May 29th.
Hailing from the Midwest, Kiza Sosay brings forth a sleek style of hip-hop showcasing witty lyricism over percussion-driven instrumentals. The sound is describable as a modern-day Beastie Boys, but with Kiza’s own unique flair and spin. Throughout the course of his musical journey the rapper has earned a reputation for clever bars that are sure to make you crack a smile when you catch them. Even on records with some of the genre’s bigger names like Skyzoo and Sir Michael Rocks you are still left with a lasting impression from Kiza each time. Though he has not formally released a project since 2012’s Hip Hop Runaway, Kiza Sosay is set to prove that the time away has only allowed him to become more polished and stronger as an MC in the near future.
On the aforementioned Ice Water EP, Kiza Sosay displays his more refined style throughout an 18-minute listen in a way that impacted me instantly. The project was cohesive, each track weaving into the next seamlessly, creating for an overall set that is direct and skillfully performed. “The people that said they were hot were not really up to par and that’s why I came from the Ice Water perspective.”, Kiza said when asked about the inspiration of the EP. It’s that motivating spirit that pushes the set-list as he makes a declaration as a force to watch in the rap scene.
Though the music will always be the driving force behind Kiza Sosay, he has also grown in leaps and bounds as an established business figure. In fact, the “Ice Water” movement has leaked into other facets such as clothing, events like his upcoming “Ice Water Koolie” showcase, and more further cementing his acumen for being a boss. In fact, Kiza’s multi-dimensional skill set and charismatic personality were two of the more enjoyable qualities I picked up from him in our time conversing. To learn more about his full movement and get the insight behind his Ice Water EP before it’s release listen to the complete interview below.
