Interview: Black Theory on “The Balance of Fire & Water” EP, Touring w/ Famsquad & Sir Michael Rocks & More

When two things come together in perfect synergy the results can be overwhelmingly good. One prime example is the soundscape that has been created by San Antonio hip-hop duo Black Theory. Together, the Texas tandem has carved a niche for their broad spectrum of sound and unconventional rhyme patterns.

Their careers look to be on the upswing following the release of their February EP The Balance of Fire and Water. Not only was the project met with a warm reception, it has lead to new opportunities such as an upcoming performance on “The Sport Coat Willie Tour”. Their two scheduled performances will see them take the stage alongside Famsquad with other artists such as Sir Michael Rocks also on the bill.

Before they head out for the tour, which will begin June 9th, we sought out to gain more information about what their show will entail. Among some other things we talked on was the history behind the group’s formation, the aforementioned The Balance of Fire & Water project and more. Head below to read the entire conversation.

How long have you two been doing music? Was it always a group or did you start separately?

Well me myself (Master Eon) have been doing music about 10 years , and my younger brother (A3U, Nova Sin) has been doing music about 7 years. As far as the group goes, there were 5 of us in total but me and my brother hung out more consistently. So, we just decided to form a group within a group if you will.

What lead you two to join forces?

Beside being brothers, I feel it’s because we’re just very like minded and agree on a lot of different aspects of life.

Coming from Texas I’m sure you’re aware of the rich history your state has in Hip-Hop dating back to the early 90’s with UGK & Geto Boyz. How do you all feel about the state of rap in the region especially San Antonio right now?

Man we love being from Texas. There’s a lot of influence in every direction out here. With that being said, our city is full of potential and everyone is really moving and growing out. We really feel you’ll be hearing from our city in the near coming future.

Your sound is unique but it kind of reminds me of a more modern Outkast, especially as a duo and with your content/production. Would you consider them to be influences? Who else inspired you?

Outkast is definitely a huge influence to us however, we are influenced by many different genres and many different people such as: Rap-A-Lot , S.U.C, Swisha House, Goodie Mob, Samantha James, Erykah Badu, Korn, Queens of the Stone Age, Coldplay, we could go on forever.

From what I can see the world of Anime is an interest for your group. Outside of the album artwork how do you feel it affects your sound?

It was a pretty big influence to our sound as kids. We always used to
watch and enjoy the music from some of our favorite shows. Today it plays a
major role in a lot of our production.

What is the significance of your title “The Balance of Fire and Water”?

I guess you can say it’s just a story showing that even complete opposites like Fire & Water can balance out and come together for the greater good.

If you had to say one of each of you represented one of those elements who is the more aggressive “Fire” type and who’s the more calm and collected “Water”?

Well I (Master Eon) am Fire while my brother (A3U, Nova Sin) is Water. Ironically though I would say he is the more aggressive one while I am the more calm one.

For me personally “World Without Worth” is a stand out on the album. With that being said I would like to know what is of the most worth in the world to you?

As cliché as it sounds we would have to say family.

What was the goal you all were looking to accomplish with Fire & Water?

We really were just trying to introduce are self to the world.

How has the response to it been?

It’s been nothing but good feedback so far. Its also really helped us network quite a bit.

Do you all have plans to shoot any visuals for the album?

To be honest lately we’ve been in the studio working on the next project but anything can happen.

You all will be taking the stage when Famsquad and Sir Michael Rocks kick off the “Sport Coat Willie Tour”. Two different stops in Dallas and Seguin, Texas on June 9th and 11th. How excited are you all for that?

Pretty excited , We’re some really big fans of Sir Michael. Coming up we loved him in Cool Kids. We’ve also worked on a couple tracks with Famsquad and we’re really digging thier sound as well, it will be a pleasure to finally meet them in person.

By chance will you all be looking to perform any new music at the shows?

We will be performing with Famsquad on some of there new releases. Unfortunately this go around we won’t be performing any of our music.

Keeping with the subject of new music, although “Fire and Water” has only been out a few month’s rap does move at a rapid pace in this internet age. That being said, I must ask what information you can provide as far as your next body of work?

Well like we said we’ve been in the studio quite a bit lately putting together this new project. We’re not gonna give too much information on this topic but we can tell you it will be EP.

Is there a tentative release date?

As of right now, No.

Will you all be looking to move into any different sounds are just more so improving upon the chemistry you already have?

We planned on doing quite a bit of both. When it comes down to it we’re just trying to grow.

What else is in the works for you in the second half of 2016?

Its really to early to tell right now, but we expect are manager Keeynote to keep us busy like he has been.
