Adam Reverie brings cultural appropriation to the spotlight on “Wanna Be A Nigga”

If you’ve followed the hype around Adam Reverie’s “Soul Ties” EP you know he is not one to shy away from any serious issues. One that certainly needs to be spoken upon is the matter of cultural appropriation. More so than ever it seems as though America is infatuated with the things that compose the black culture like hip-hop, fashion and more. It’s as though one particular reality that blacks face is conveniently ignored though, as those same people who jump to the “cooler” parts of our being will turn the cheek to the struggle.

You can turn on your television at any time and see a black man being shot and killed on CNN, but to a large portion of white people it seems as though there is always some false reasoning used to justify it. That’s a frustrating type of situation to live in, especially when you are watching things that have been popular in the black community become “trendy” when exposed to other races. I mean even Kylie Jenner is rocking du-rags these days. It’s an observation Adam Reverie has made and decided to address on “Wanna Be A Nigga”.

On the record Adam unleashes a serious look upon appropriation from all areas. To start he address our own fault as a people for setting a bad example for others to follow. He is correct in his assertion though, as we really can’t expect others to treat us better if we do not do that with each other first. I commend him for not simply placing blame and holding everyone accountable.

That being said, the record does continue on to focus on some of the long history that has faced the very same black people largely responsible for building this country as slaves. KKK and other hate organizations, social injustice, slavery and inequality are all very real topics. They are things that have to be accepted by everyone involved before a change can ever occur.

Whether black, white or brown it is important to create dialogue if the country will ever truly become a “free” place for all. Records like this one are important to create the thoughts that will spark a new revolution. Adam Reverie stated he created this record 2 years ago and I for one think he couldn’t have liberated it at a better time. Give it a listen and ask yourself do you really want to be a nigga?
