When you think of mud your thoughts may instantly go to the substances made by rain and dirt. Believe you me, while there is plenty of mud in the state of Mississippi this particular mud holds a fair amount of clout that is steadily building. Jay Dee and his Mud Drip Productions imprint has become one of the most solidified up-and-coming movements in North Mississippi. He brings forth a unique flair and vernacular that continues to set him apart from several of his counterparts in music.
On the horizon for Jay Dee is not only his own project, but volume 3 in the compilation series he has constructed to showcase the state’s talents. Titled “Free Spill”, the last edition accruing over 15,000 views and nearly 9,000 downloads. As he gears up for the release of volume 3 we decided to chat with Jay Dee to learn more about his creative “Mud Drip” movement, life in his hometown of Columbus, MS and much more.
I guess my first question should be “what that drip do?” in your own words lol.
“What That Drip Do” spillin that flavor and muddripping the world. But its another way to say how you doing or what’s going on. Just another greeting.
What can you tell us about the whole Mud Drip movement? From my understanding you kind of always had this vision in your mind since you were younger?
My goal is to hopefully Mud Drip the world. To help make my dreams come true and also make it out of MS with the music or anything you put your mind to. The idea really came to when I was 17. I was in Alternative School doing a 200 day sentence after I got kicked out of Columbus High School. I was always gifted with musical talent but when I started catching people attention they told me “ Jay Dee you got a gift fam it’s time to take off”. As far as the lingo and slang it was always there though.
Did you think it would all develop to the level it is at now?
Yes because at first when I was doing I music I really didn’t have a specific sound or flavor. Over time I gained that and it is what made me unique. Everything is a process in time.
Growing up in your hometown what was it like for you?
It was alright growing in Columbus, Ms. I’m from the Deerfield Subsection off of Lemberg but we don’t call it Deerfield no more we call it DeerPhilly. It was tough and nice at the same time cause in my neighborhood there are a lot of ups and downs. You really have to get up and get it. Nothing is given only earned.
What do you think makes Columbus unique?
I think what makes the city unique is all of the talent we have. Everyone wants to have the boss position in Columbus too but everyone can’t be boss or head huncho. They know everyone can’t be but they still try. It’s really the talent and Independence for self in the city that’s unique.
You had the Dripped For You Ball single that did some pretty good numbers recently. What was your mind like going into recording that one?
It was 3 a.m.. I had been thinking about making the song all day and I always told my homie Teryonte I was going to make a song for him. When I heard the beat it was just magical. There was a lot of exception with that song cause it was my first single ever. People always wanted to see how I could maintain my career doing music alone. They also wondered how it was going to react cause at the time I was going through rap beef with Splash Gang.
You also have your #FreeSpillVolume3 compilation on the way. What details can you share on that?
FreeSpillVol3 hosted by the Pap ( Jay Dee). Nothing but hot artists throughout the state and the world. One my songs went viral on Vol2 of the series. It’s just me trying to put the state on really.
What’s something interesting about you that not many people knows?
I really like promotion more than I like doing music. Also at this time 5 Years ago (15) I thought I was going be in the league. I was trying to get into the NBA.
What’s been the biggest failure of your life and what did you learn from it?
Getting kicked out of High School and disappointing my parents. I learnt in life no ones perfect and you gotta learn from your mistakes. Try to have a positive mindset and know that better days are coming.
At what point will you feel as though you are successful as a musician and business man?
I feel more successful as a business man because I have established my own record label and my own production with quality over quantity. I self invested time and my own earnings. I still got a long time with this music but that’s worth the wait. My time is coming if get the plan I got going right.
What do you feel are some of the greatest accomplishments of your life to date?
For music I would say my host mixtapes. When it’s coming from someone who is a mixtape host not a DJ that’s a blessing there. But in reality I helped to save one of my homies life.
You’re a very creative person from what I see. Though judging by the cover you may not be able to tell speaking with you I sense a unique mind. Where do you think that comes from?
Being Humble and having an open mind to great ideas. You have to be to be able to not get effected by negativity in an area where there is a lot of it.
What’s your main goal in life?
To be the best at my own ability in whatever I put my mind to. Whether it’s music, sports or even promotion. I want to be able to give back to the city even though the city has never given anything to me. Just to change the whole movement in the GTA and also the state but mainly to MudDripTheWorld.
How do you plan to kick off 2017?
To come in strong and hopefully make this my breakout year in the state and the world. We hoping in the game strong.
Is there anything else you would like to share before we end?
Be aware “ONMud” the mixtape coming. “Where’s Lenchy” coming. Be ready to hear about that MudDrip Movement hopefully around this time next year in another Interview From 1stDayFresh.
