Earlier this week, Zuli Jr., a rising indie R&B-pop New York-bred talent, dropped his new single “How to Feel” and we can’t stop listening! The super funky track showcases Zuli Jr.’s incredible vocal range, capped off by a sweet and fiery falsetto. If you’re a fan of Miguel, The Weeknd, or Mayer Hawthorne, you will love it! Zuli Jr. shared that the song is “about examining the ego from the outside looking in and how that affects the people around you.” “How to Feel” marks the lead single off Zuli Jr.’s sophomore studio album Stop it God., coming May 14th. He also released a fun and intriguing music video for “How to Feel,” that he directed. There’s a cool futuristic aspect to the visual as we watch Zuli Jr. in a virtual world led by the AI concept of Daisy, which seems to be the central focus for the upcoming album.

Named an “Artist You Need To Know” by Rolling Stone on the heels of his 2017 debut, Zuli Jr. continues his sonic evolution from indie rock to a soulful, R&B-leaning sound on “How to Feel” and the forthcoming album, that he first introduced via his summer 2019 single “ur mistake.” For Stop it God., Zuli Jr. drew on diverse inspirations ranging from SZA, Radiohead, King Krule and The 1975. That sounds like a killer combination! The album has been described as, “a symbolic representation of the self. The version we stare at day after day in the mirror vs. the version we upload online.”
“I tied the album concept into everyday technology,” Zuli explained. “Social media reinforces the narrative of constant reflection and being your best self all the time. We get lost in this idea—and it affects our confidence. The songs are written as a mirror image of this. A reflection on the creative being within us all, and the modern world that leads us to believe we are at the center of it. The world building on the album was the last key. It pays homage to 2001: A Space Odyssey and Black Mirror. At the same time, I found inspiration for Daisy from The Great Gatsby. Gatsby changed everything about himself for Daisy, but in the end, it was all for naught.”
Are you as intrigued by this as we are? We can’t wait to hear more! Until then, we’ll keep vibing to “How to Feel” and keep ours eyes and ears peeled for what’s next from Zuli Jr. as the album approaches. He’s certainly an artist we’ll be watching for in 2021!
