This is the comeback we have all been waiting for. Ever since little-known Toronto trio BLK dropped their debut single ‘Got It’ last year, we’ve been eager to hear from Bexk, Lilac X and Korahjay as one of the most interesting girl groups we’ve seen in some time. Drawing on influences from the 90s to now, such as Rihanna, Lil Kim, Sade, Aaliyah, TLC, Nina Simone and Kaytranada, this trio represents the zeitgeist of Canadian R&B.
The understated vibe of their newest single ‘FWM’ demonstrates their undeniably confidence and yet humble nature as each member doesn’t outshine the other, they’re all about teamwork, as Korahjay shares, “We are changing the narrative on women working together.”
These modern-day musketeers also but their identity as women of color in music at the forefront of their art, showing that in spite of different interests, styles, music tastes and cultural backgrounds, BLK moves ahead with a much bigger mission in mind. Bexk explains. “We want to be successful role models for women of any color and ethnicity.”
And Lilac X perfectly sums it all up, “We’re showing that there’s not one type of woman or girl. You can dress any way that you want. You can be anything you want.”
We love everything that BLK stands for and what’s more, we love the vivacious sounds of their new track ‘FWM’.
