Tinywiings is making her mark as the leading lady of ShowoffGang Music with the release of her new Pretty Problems EP—which also marks the beginning of her joint venture with Sony.
Prior to making her jump to the U.S., Tinywiings was actively involved in networking and strengthens her ties with all of the rappers in her hometown of Calgary, where she says they’ve built an ecosystem. Despite the fact that the growing scene still has yet to fully develop, Tinywiings advocates for the strength of the tight-knit bond she shares with her Calgary-bred peers.
“There’s just not that many of them [rappers],” Tinywiings said in part abut her Calgary rap counterparts. “But yeah, we definitely go to each other’s shows and if there’s opportunities that would suit one of us better you know, we are always kind of looking out for each other in that way because the community is so small.”
Even still, no matter the size of the movement, Tinywiings advocates for the liveliness of the industry in Calgary, which she says has provided her with some of her most lucrative opportunities to touch the stage.
“We just had this festival called Sled Island and that was like a four-day festival and it’s just all different venues all over Calgary and all different genres Artists from all over,” she added.
The combination of her boots-on-the-ground approach in addition to a wide-reaching online presence is, in part, what helped Tinywiings secure her deal with ShowOffGang Music and Sony.
“Yeah it’s like obviously a huge deal, the ShowOffGang stuff just felt right, or I wouldn’t have signed anything,” Tinywiings said. “You hear so many horror stories and stuff, right? Like, ‘don’t sign this, don’t sign that,’ but I never really felt like that with these guys. It’s like these are my older brothers. They are just like my team and they’re looking out for me and I’ve just felt that since day one.”
The Pittsburgh-established imprint, founded by Tinywiings’ “Wind Me Up” collaborator J-HAZE, has largely taken the reigns in both her artist development and the orchestration of her joint-effort venture. Which is something that she describes as somewhat like a heaven-sent situation.
”With the Sony stuff, that’s kind of above my head, they’re like, ‘you focus on the music and we’re doing this for you,’ and I’m like, oh my God, music to my ears,” Tinywiings said.
Given the aforementioned, Tinywiings’ five-track Pretty Problems EP serves as somewhat of a coming out party for her. In addition to joining forces with J-HAZE, Tinywiings also appears opposite of up-and-comer 86LOVE for their club-ready anthem “Pop Sum.”
