Coming from Mississippi I am well aware of all the talent that resides in this state. More recently names like Rae Sremmurd, David Banner or Big K.R.I.T. ring bells but a look into the history book clearly displays the array of impactful musicians. Everyone from B.B. King, Brittany Spears, David Ruffin, Brandy, and Elvis Presley trace back to the state of Mississippi, making a widespread imprint on about every genre of music as we know it. Countless people have a gift that just needs to be heard by the masses. The problem lies in the sheer lack of outlets for getting one’s dreams out. A long list of record labels, radio stations and other forms of assistance are readily available in Hip-Hop hotbeds like Atlanta or New York, but in this state you have to grind. That’s just what D. Horton has done over the 5 year course of his career as an MC and it is slowly paying off for him.
D. Horton has built a very loyal grassroots fanbase that is in no way hesitant to rush and support his “Brilliant Minds” campaign. As the 25-year old continues to age in the game, Horton expands his brand into a multi-faceted movement including merchandising and a strong touring network throughout the South. This base comes not only from his talent as a lyrically profound rhyme-smith but also a strong-minded, humble, and accessible person in general. Even at what one would consider an “underground” level he understands the weight of his words and the importance of engaging his followers. To put it in different terms, if you find someone who is a fan of D. Horton they are likely to be one for the rest of their lives. This was exactly the case with me after an introduction to his music last year.

Seemingly always creating music with a message, D. Horton has grown in his artistry with each release. We caught up with the Columbus, MS representative last year for a featured interview shortly after the release of his The Sessions project. As impressive as that EP was, the skill showed on his sequel, The Sessions 2 , is superior. Released on April 20th, it acts as an exploration into the man himself, David Horton, as he grows spiritually, mentally, and as a father. Records like Black Butterfly push forward messages of self-worth and value to women, a rare message in such a misogynistic world of rap. On The Offer, D. Horton exhibits his writing skills on a song that conceptually sees him choose between a Godly or Devilish route of action. Everything on the LP is thought provoking and upon listening it’s obvious that he meticulously planned it all.
As The Sessions 2 continues to make it’s rounds we gratefully were given the chance to speak once again with D. Horton. From our conversation it’s obvious that the development is not solely in the music, he truly has embodied these strong morals and thoughts to live out. Whether you are a long-time fan of “Dave The Rapper” or this is your first time hearing the name, the interview above is one you need to hear. He definitely uses it as an opportunity to spread some knowledge and I for one am glad I was able to take part in it.
