What is your name and what city do you rep?
My name is Skypp aka King Skypp and I’m hailing from Indianapolis, IN. Better known as Naptown.
Tell us about your latest releases, what inspired you to create them?
My latest release is titled “King of Indiana”. That name represents a lot of things. The “king” is a representation of my race. Black is king. The “Indiana” is a representation of home, of course. Something I will always adore and rep. The African-American race struggles to get its recognition in the state of Indiana. Especially the hip-hop community. This album is designed to break down those barriers. It’s time to take the respect.
What is unique about you and your music?
My story is what’s unique. No one has my story except me. I’m very vocal about my past experiences and I try to make sense of it all in my music. I know people are listening and may be experiencing some of the same things. I’m also very experimental. I haven’t really locked into a sound completely because I can do it all. This most recent album feels like home though.
What shaped your music?
The struggle and my ambition are what shaped and continues to shape my music. The ambition more than anything. When you listen to me you’re going to want to be better. Do better. That’s just my nature. Everyday I’m trying to set the bar higher. I’m known around my city as the go getter. Major longevity and my engine is better than a Honda! Haha.
When did you realize you were going to make music professionally?
High school was when I knew I had something. I had made thousands of dollars selling CDs in the hallways. Truthfully, I wasnt even trying. That’s when I knew this was going to be my life. I had a lot of girls too. As a kid that was all the validation I needed.
What type of music do you listen to?
I listen to a lot of soul and gospel music. Of course hip-hop but more than anything, those two. I need to connect with the music. That’s just me though. I wouldn’t be who I am without the music that touched my soul. A lot of people don’t know that about me.
What inspires you to write music?
My supporters inspire me. My family inspires me. The struggle inspires me. I find new inspiration every day. A homeless man on the corner might inspire me. Something a guy said to me on the basketball court might inspire me. Inspiration is everywhere. Use it! That’s why I never run out of things to write about. The world is our playground. Soak it all in.
What do you do when you don’t do music (creative or otherwise) and that you are passionate about?
I work in the school system on my down time. I know how it feels to have no direct role models or people to look up to. I try to be that for the youth. I understand that I may not be everyone’s cup of tea musically, but as a person, I try to positively affect as many children as I can.
Happiness to you is…
Happiness is personal. You won’t find it anywhere else. It’s within you. It’s peace, comfort, humility and gratefulness. I’m working on complete happiness. I recommend therapy for all black men and women. It’s not going to solve your problems, but it’ll provide you with some tools to help you cope.
What do you wish you were told when you first started making music that you think would help artists just starting out?
Stop being so d**n emotional! Man! That’s the key to doing any kind of business. Don’t take everything personal! I use to think the world was against me. In reality, I just had to go get it! That’s exactly what I did too.
Tell us about your upcoming projects…
“King of Indiana” is doing its thing on the iTunes charts. I’m prepping to release Side B in the upcoming months & it sounds just as good as the main version. Coming soon is the music video for my single with Rhymefest titled, “Fix Yo’ Crown”. That’s just a couple of things coming up on the agenda of Skypp.
Where do we find you music / music projects?
My music is available everywhere from iTunes, to Tidal to Spotify etc. Follow me @Skypp317 and check out my website officialskypp.com for more.
