Camille Schmidt impresses with “XOXO”

Brooklyn-based songwriter Camille Schmidt has returned with another indie banger. Called “XOXO”, the song is the first single off of her debut album. The track follows her stellar EP release Good Person, which catapulted the artist as a rising artist to watch, earlier this year.

“XOXO” begins with atmospheric synths and Camille’s vocals which are heavily autotuned, a departure for the artist who usually releases more organic indie rock or folk rock releases. “XOXO” is an alt pop hit with a grit-laced edge and memorable hook. On the theme of the music, Camille shares, “XOXO is a love note with a few different recipients: the people who never really got me, and this character I used to feel I had to play around people. Over the past few years I’ve discovered that playfulness can be a real hex against all that inauthenticity. And playfulness along with the chaos of self and solitude are actually all things to revel in. This song is a reminder for me to not take myself so seriously. But at the same time to take “unseriousness” – play and fantasy – with the utmost seriousness. I wrote XOXO in a moment where I was finding a delicious freedom in realizing, “Huh so you don’t like me…. Oops, I don’t care!” i.e. XOXO, feel better soon ;).”

Camille Schmidt is a prolific artist who is known for her deeply honest takes on everything from relationships, family, friendships, self image and sexuality. Her music is not only candid but also playful and witty, luring the listener in with every note.
