Exclusive Interview: Rising Artist Kyriq

What is your name and what city do you rep?

My name is Kyriq and I’m from Miami, FL but currently live in Houston, TX.

Tell us about your latest releases, what inspired you to create them?

KiMET is my latest album. It’s a collaborative project between myself, Immanie, and Saint MRZ. KiMET is an example of one of the life cycles we tend to face- transformation. More often than not, we need growth to elevate our wellbeing and reach higher heights. KiMET is a lesson in the personal evolutionary science of self. Various stages in the evolution of self include: acknowledging the problem, transforming your perspective, addressing the root of the problem, isolating yourself, finding motivation to celebrate your newfound perspective, and closing the door on those problems to enter your new vessel. I really wanted to make something that people would feel and connect with; especially on a melodic level. I was truly inspired to finalize the project with my co-collaborators; Saint MRZ and Immanie, once we started to really form the soundscape which really happened after we created Halo. Super thankful for those two!

What is unique about you and your music?

I like to consider myself a wildcard. You never truly know what you’re gonna get from me when you press play. I try to make each new project its own immersive world for the listeners to enjoy and connect with. My music is intentional, honest, introspective, vulnerable, and fun all at the same time. I like to give my listeners a whole spectrum of feelings to really indulge themselves.

What shaped your music?

I would say my experiences and my influences. I grew up listening to OutKast, Lauryn Hill, D’Angelo, Biggie, 50 Cent, etc. so I just pulled elements from all of these artists to really craft my own identity.

When did you realize you were going to make music professionally?

In 2017. I entered a rap contest hosted by DJ Hoppa and won and I realized I could actually do this. I grew up listening to a lot of DJ Hoppa and Funk Volume so being able to actually make an impression on him truly meant the world to me and really shaped my confidence in my music. I decided to take it seriously from that point on and even won an additional rap contest hosted by Dizzy Wright. That sealed the deal for me as far as intention and self-belief and even landed me my first management deal with DMP INC.

What type of music do you listen to?

Everything. Jazz, rap, Neo soul, alternative, r&b, you name it. I’m heavily influenced by BLK ODYSSY, Kendrick Lamar, JID, Anderson Paak, Westside Boogie, Spillage Village, Reason, etc.

What inspires you to write music?

Life experiences and just the actual spirituality of music itself.  The music usually tells me what to write. Listening and channeling my thoughts and emotions always allows me to create the most honest piece of work. My friends, Immanie and Saint MRZ also inspire me to dive deeper into my melodic IQ and find comfort in my melodic approach to music.

What do you do when you don’t do music (creative or otherwise) and that you are passionate about?

I play a lot of basketball and video games (call of duty, to be exact). I also enjoy spending time with my wife and our dogs. I’m really into fashion and fashion design as well so I enjoy putting together outfits in my spare time. Lastly, I work for NASA as an electrical engineer so that usually keeps me busy during the day lol.

Happiness to you is…

Being content and complete with the current situation. Being grateful for the people you have around you and being nurtured just as much as you nurture other people. Happiness is having fun, living life, and choosing to be better each day than the previous day. Loving yourself and loving your environment.

What do you wish you were told when you first started making music that you think would help artists just starting out?

Don’t put too much pressure on yourself and just enjoy the process of your growth. Also, learn the best marketing strategies for yourself and figure out how to consistently implement them!

Tell us about your upcoming projects…

Working on another collaborative EP (2025) with Saint MRZ, 9TOFYVE, Cwiswho, and JMars. We’re forming a collective in Houston.

Also have singles (2025) that will be rolled out after KiMET with my art collective I Florida; FriendOrFaux.

Lastly, I’ve got a few singles and another solo album coming in 2025.
